What is a Cardiologist? Explained by Dr Amit Khandelwal

What is a Cardiologist ?

A cardiologist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing, treating, and preventing illnesses of the heart, arteries, and veins.

They examine, diagnose, and treat issues including as blockages, heart injuries, and illnesses, as well as monitor other variables such as excessive cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

When a patient is directed to see a cardiologist by their primary care physician, they will be evaluated for any risk factors that might be causing heart damage, such as obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, bad eating habits, or a family history of heart disease.

In addition to dealing with problems such as congenital heart defects, coronary artery diseases, heart failures, valvular heart diseases, and electrophysiology, the doctor can also evaluate and treat conditions related to other parts of the circulatory system. The doctor commonly treats rheumatic heart disease, hypertensive heart disease, ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular illness, and inflammatory heart disease. The doctor has a kind attitude toward patients and is well-known for giving appropriate treatment and attention to each and every one of them.

Cardiologist Surgeons And Its Types

There are numerous types of cardiologists, each specialized in a particular aspect of heart care (it should be noted that some cardiologists may conduct a combination of the following):

  • Non-invasive Cardiologists - will examine patients, provide cardiology consultations, and order and interpret testing (stress tests or electrocardiograms). They will figure out the most efficient strategy to treat patients, whether through medicine, lifestyle modifications, or a mix of the two. If required, they will send patients to a heart surgeon.
  • Interventional Cardiologists - Patients with coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, and peripheral vascular disease are all treated. They do angioplasty and stent placement, embolic protection, atherectomy methods, and mitral valve repairs.
  • Non-interventional Cardiologists - will do the same tests and exams as a non-invasive cardiologist, but can also undertake small surgeries such as cardiac catheterization (a procedure that locates blocked arteries). If a blockage is discovered, the patient will be sent to a cardiologist who specialises in interventional procedures.
  • Electrophysiology Cardiologists or heart-rhythm specialists - Pacemakers, defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization devices will be implanted under the skin for sensing, pacing, and shock delivery. They will also perform ablation procedures to correct cardiac rhythm disorders and supply necessary medication.
  • It is important to point out that there are other doctors who specialise in cardiac disorders but are not termed cardiologists, such as cardio-thoracic surgeons.
  • Cardiothoracic surgeons treat patients referred to them by cardiologists and have finished a surgical residency programme rather than an internal medicine residency, like a cardiologist does. They do out difficult procedures such as heart bypasses and transplants.
